Contacting Elected Representatives

Writing a letter to your elected officials is a very effective way of getting your messages across. Here are a few helpful hints in drafting your correspondence:

  • Identify yourself and your position on the issue right up front. Be clear, concise and educate your legislator on your point of view.

  • If you are addressing a piece of legislation affecting Alzheimer’s patients and families, share your story about how the disease has touched your life and why you think this legislation is good or bad.

  • Note if you reside in that legislator’s district. Votes count !

  • Remember timing is important. Direct your letters early enough to make a difference in moving a bill successfully through the committee process.

  • Make sure your correspondence is one page or less. Attach supporting information.

  • Remember to take the time to express your appreciation!
