Volunteer Opportunities
Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Every volunteer contributes to our ability to serve the community.
We understand that your volunteer time is a valuable gift. We want to work with you to ensure that your volunteer work is rewarding to and fits your interests and talents. We are also flexible in our scheduling to accommodate most peoples schedules and time commitments.
We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to highlight your talents and pique your interest. Listed below are our most common positions.
Advocacy / Public Policy
Working with legislators and public officials to advance the causes of those affected by Alzheimer's disease. From planning policy to talking with local leaders to sharing your personal story about Alzheimer's, we work to bring dementia issues to the forefront of public policy debate.
Clerical and Office
Answering phones, filing, data entry and copying materials is vital to the smooth operation of the agency, so that we may serve those affected by Alzheimer's disease. Usually during office hours only.
Community Education
Attend community events and speak one-on-one with the public regarding Alzheimer's disease, our Chapter resources and Desert Southwest programs.
Development
Working with Desert Southwest staff to secure funding so that the programs and services we offer to the public remain free-of-charge, and that the agency can continue to carry on its mission.
Health Fairs
Attend community events, staffing an information table from the Desert Southwest, to help people, one-on-one, understand Alzheimer's disease, our Chapter resources and programs.
Internet Projects
Helping to update the Desert Southwest chapters internet capabilities. We are looking for experienced individuals who can assist us in expanding our online capabilities and offerings to the general public.
Mailings
Assisting the staff with our bulk mailings, such as the newsletter, to help inform the community about the great work of the Desert Southwest chapter.
Memory Walk
Helping to put on our largest special event of the year. Thousands of people across the Desert Southwest chapter come out to walk, enjoy live entertainment and remember family members affected by Alzheimer's disease.
Multi-Cultural Outreach
Working in minority communities to help increase the understanding of Alzheimer's disease, our Chapter resources and Desert Southwest programs.
Outreach Ambassador
Working in your immediate, local community to help increase the understanding of Alzheimer's disease, our Chapter resources and Desert Southwest programs.
Planning Committees
Work with the staff to chart the course for the Desert Southwest chapter. We have committees on a variety of areas related to the organization. Most committees require a monthly commitment for meetings and some self-directed work..
Speakers Bureau
Present to community groups and companies about Alzheimer's disease. You will receive all the necessary training and materials to present education sessions to help increase the understanding of Alzheimer's disease and its related issues.
Special Events
Assist the staff in producing exciting events to advance the mission of the Desert Southwest chapter. Work can include pre-event committee planning, day-of logistics, corporate volunteer days, and family volunteer opportunities.
Support Group Leader
Facilitate a local support group, helping those affected by Alzheimer's disease. If you have experience with group facilitation, and a solid knowledge of Alzheimer's and related dementias, this may be just the right thing for you. Most groups meet monthly and have two facilitators. You will receive 6 hours of training and periodic In-service Updates.
Telephone Helpline
Lend a sympathetic ear and provide information and referrals to individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease. Professionals are available to help you with the more complex situations and occasional crisis. You will need to attend an orientation/training and periodic Helpline In-service Updates.
